Abstract

The present study was designed to investigate effect of bile acids (cholic, glycocholic, taurocholic and deoxycholic acids) on motility of the isolated duodenum of rabbits. Effect of different doses (30 pg/d1-600 g/di)of these bile acids on the motility of rabbit duodenum was studied. And also observed were changes in the duodenal motility following administration of bile acids before and after treatment of intestinal strip with several drugs including adrenergic receptor blockers.
1. The motility of isolated duodenum was invariably inhibited by bile acids. Intensity of inhibitory effect was GCA, DCA, CA and TCA in increasing order.
2. The minimum effective dosage for inhibition of intestinal motility was 30 g/dl for GCA and DCA whereas that for CA and TCA was 200 g/dl.
3. GCA seems to inhibit motility of isolated duodenum by its direct action on intestinal smooth muscle while TCA inhibits duodenal motility principally by antihistaminic effect.
4. DCA and CA appear to inhibit intestinal motility by antihistaminic effect and by direct action on visceral muscle as well.
